This article was originally published in 2019 and subsequently updated in 2021, 2024 and 2025.  <\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Becoming a real estate agent in Ontario starts with the pre-registration education component (this article) and progresses to registration with RECO as a real estate salesperson. <a href=\"https:\/\/passit.ca\/real-estate-pulse\/how-to-become-a-real-estate-salesperson-in-ontario-a-step-by-step-guide\/\">See the step-by-step guide to review the entire process.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Pre-Registration Phase<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s what you need to know about the education requirements that must be completed to apply for registration with <a href=\"https:\/\/reco.on.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RECO<\/a> as a real estate salesperson in Ontario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prerequisites To Apply<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Canadian Secondary School Diploma; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>GED Certificate; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Equivalent credential (equivalency process is handled by the course provider); or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Challenge an admission exam<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>English language proficiency is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Course Curriculum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>RECO provides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reco.on.ca\/learners\/becoming-a-real-estate-agent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a detailed learning path<\/a>. Here&#8217;s a brief summary of what you need to know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are a total of seven courses to complete the pre-registration portion of the program:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Course 1: <em>Real Estate Essentials<\/em> (self-directed online)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Course 2: <em>Residential Real Estate Transactions<\/em> (self-directed online)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Course 3: <em>Additional Residential Real Estate Transactions<\/em> (self-directed online)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simulation 1: <em>Additional Residential Real Estate Transactions<\/em> (Zoom or in-person class)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Course 4: <em>Commercial Real Estate Transactions<\/em> (self-directed online)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simulation 2:<em> Commercial Real Estate Transactions<\/em> (Zoom or in-person class)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Course 5: <em>Getting Started<\/em> (self-directed online)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The simulation sessions are mandatory classes which are conducted virtually by Zoom or in person (locations and availability depend on the course provider).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Each simulation session can either be completed in one week (Monday to Friday) or 2-3 consecutive weekends.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Class sizes will range from 12 to 24 students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>During the simulation sessions, you will spend your time between the full group and various breakout groups for role-play activities. Your attendance and participation is required for each day (9 &#8211; 5, with a 1-hour break for lunch).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exams <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are a total of six exams (each course has an associated exam, except Course 5: <em>Getting Started)<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All exams are multiple choice (one answer only) and the minimum passing score is 75%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exams can be written online or in-person. Many students prefer the in-person option as it avoids the technical requirements and process of online exam proctoring.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Program Fees<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The total <em>minimum<\/em> cost for the Real Estate Salesperson Program is $4,795 ($4,140 for the <em>Pre-Registration Phase<\/em> and $655 for the <em>Post-Registration Phas<\/em>e).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fees are paid for each course as you progress through the program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There&#8217;s some extra costs to consider:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>$75\u2013125 Program Application Fee (mandatory, varies by provider)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$120 Exam Retake Fee (only if you fail an exam and need a re-write)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These fees are for the education component only. Upon completion of the <em>Pre-Registration Phase<\/em> learners must register with RECO and establish employment with a brokerage. <a href=\"https:\/\/passit.ca\/faqs\/how-much-does-it-cost-to-get-a-real-estate-licence\">Here&#8217;s a list of the additional costs to consider at point of registration.<\/a> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Time Commitment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Highly dependent on you, as much of the program is self-directed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each course has a recommended completion time to keep you on track.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <em>Pre-Registration Phase<\/em> could be completed in as few as 6 months or as long as 2 years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Timelines may be impacted by the availability of simulation sessions and exams.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once the <em>Pre-Registration Phase<\/em> is complete you submit an application to RECO for registration as a real estate salesperson. You then have 2 years to complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reco.on.ca\/learners\/post-registration-education-for-agents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Post-Registration Phase<\/em><\/a>. All of the courses in the <em>Post-Registration Phase<\/em> are self-directed and there are no exams.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Application Process<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Research the available providers (<a href=\"https:\/\/passit.ca\/real-estate-pulse\/comparing-reco-approved-providers-for-the-new-ontario-real-estate-salesperson-program\/\">here is a helpful comparison guide<\/a>):\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/humber.ca\/realestateeducation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Humber Polytechnic<\/a> (available for start dates on or after Oct 1, 2025)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/realestate.algonquincollege.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Algonquin College<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/flemingcollege.ca\/realestate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fleming College<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ontariorealestatecollege.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Career College Group<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Create a RECO Account and obtain your RECO ID<\/strong>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/myweb.reco.on.ca\/members\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RECO&#8217;s MyWeb Portal<\/a><\/strong>. As part of this process you will select your <strong>education provider<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will then be directed to that provider&#8217;s website to create an account and apply for the program. Each provider has a non-refundable application fee ($75-125) and will require proof of a Canadian secondary school diploma, GED certificate or an acceptable equivalent credential.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Next Steps<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do your research!
